Thomas and I decided to take the route of not learning Margaux's sex until she was born and so were coming up with various nicknames for 'it'. When Margaux was about the size of a butter bean - one of Thomas' favourite foods - I signed off an email with love from Butterbean and me... and the name stuck!
Having an 'it' in Spain and Portugal is highly unusual - to the point where my hospital gynaecology notes had ****DOES NOT WANT TO KNOW THE SEX OF THE BABY**** written in the transcript. Nevertheless, we were determined not to find out and all the staff (across both countries) managed to keep the news from us.
I digress.
Butterbean was conceived in February 2013, which meant it was a slightly difficult when Thomas and I holidayed in Corsica with all parental in-laws at Easter… I wasn’t even sure I was pregnant (the test was negative but I was experiencing many of the symptoms) but there was no way we could tell any of the grandparents-to-be. I developed some sneaky ways of wearing appearing to join in the vino consumption and of hiding my growing tummy… (See the next post for Corsica photos)
To celebrate the opening of Matilda The Musical on Broadway Thomas and I headed over, where we met up with Mum, Dad, and Emily. I was so eager to share our Big News with my family even though I was only 8 weeks pregnant, and Thomas agreed that we would tell important people as we saw them. I managed to keep the secret until Thomas arrived, using similar tactics to the ones from Corsica – ‘No alcohol thanks, I’m too jetlagged and I’ll fall asleep’; ‘No coffee thanks, I think the hot chocolate here looks really good’; pouring my wine into someone else’s glass when they weren’t looking etc. – so it was a very exciting announcement that we made together. Unsurprisingly, it went down very well!

We waited for the 12-week scan, which identified no causes for concern, before telling Thomas’ parents… he taught me how to say “I’m pregnant” in French (“je suis enceinte”, in case you’re wondering) and let me break the news to his Mum. It was very special to be able to tell Rita and Jean-Paul such great news, and it was rather emotionally received – all in a very good way!
I was 4 months pregnant here and I felt SOOO fat from the pregnancy at the time!
